Recently our research crew had the privilege of assisting biologists with Towson University on their study of the endangered Northern Map Turtles in Maryland. Starting in 2008 their team began learning more about this largely unknown population that is found nowhere else in Maryland except the Susquehanna and its tributaries. The majority of the early efforts were focused below the Conowingo Dam and now they are shifting to the population above the dam that has been separated by the man-made barrier with movements, habitat use, hibernation sites, nesting sites and overall population not fully understood. Their hope is that by conducting a mark and recapture study along with radio tracking females they will answer many of the questions that still exist for this incredible native turtle.
