SWS has announced two exciting new events for the month of June. On Friday June 21 there will be a Firefly Hike & Campfire and on Saturday June 29 will be a Talk and Walk focused on creating your own Meadow.
Firefly Hike & Campfire –
Join us on a walk through our forest and meadow to witness one of nature’s greatest wonders, the bioluminescent symphony of light put on by the firefly, a tiny native beetle that is known for its ability to communicate through its built in illumination. We will discuss ways you can encourage fireflies to live in your backyards as well as talk about and hopefully discover some other nocturnal wildlife. We will give you a first look at our stargazing and wildlife viewing platform as we listen for wildlife such as owls and coyotes.
After our hike we will gather around our campfire ring to enjoy some s’mores and talk about our work with local wildlife.
** This event is weather and firefly dependent, our rain date will be TBD but Saturday 6/28 at the same time is the likely date.** Event is limited due to parking and seating at our campfire ring.** Tickets are $5 for each adult and $3 per child plus fees, (or make a donation for the amount of your choosing) first come first served (please use link to purchase online).** We will meet at our the parking area in front of our barn classroom at 8:30pm and hike along our wooded area and up to the hillside platform together. Parking is limited so please carpool if possible.** The Susquehannock Wildlife Center property is not yet open to the public and is only open for special events such as this one at this time.
** This event made possible by a grant from the Harford County Office of Community & Economic Development

Grow Your Own Meadow – Talk & Walk – June 29th 2-4pm
Join us for a talk and walk as we discuss the importance of an often overlooked habitat, native meadows and grasslands. These beautiful and somewhat rare local landscapes not only provide habitat and food for a variety of wildlife species, but aid in reducing stormwater runoff, protecting our watershed. We will start off the talk in our barn classroom where we will premiere a new educational video we have created about creating meadows and lead a discussion on how you can create your own meadow, from a mini-meadow in your garden to converting an unused field or corridor into meadow. We will help connect attendees to potential programs and resources to obtain seed and even grants. We will then hike around the Wildlife Center property to look at mini-meadow strips and 6 acres of field converted to a native wildflower and grassland habitat.
** This event and video made possible by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
