The Susquehannock Wildlife Society research team takes you inside of an annual event in nature that few ever get to experience, the spring amphibian breeding in a vernal pool at night. In this very special place in the coastal plain of Harford County, Maryland, iconic species such as the spotted salamander, wood frogs, spring peepers and even fairy shrimp were all found in healthy numbers. Vernal pools (wetlands that typically are filled by rain/snow and dry up each year) provide critical habitat for the life cycle of a number of species that rely on wetlands that lack certain predators like fish that can establish themselves in permanent wetlands. It is important that we protect our local vernal pools from pollution and unnecessary destruction so that these incredible species and this amazing annual event continues on for many more generations to come.
