Amelia and Doug checking on SWS’s first honey bee hive

We have bees! Thanks to the hard work of our newly trained volunteer bee keeper Amelia and her mentor with the Susquehanna Bee Keepers Association, Doug, we now have a full and active hive at the Wildlife Center doing what bees do best, making honey! While these aren’t the native pollinators that we are working to provide habitat and native plants for, these are an important example of using wildlife to help sustain human agriculture. Since the Wildlife Center is in the heart of the agricultural landscape of Harford County, we plan to continue aspects of that tradition in unique, wildlife friendly ways which also include our native Persimmon orchard and PawPaw tree groves. We hope to have our first batch of honey for you all to try early this summer!
