Join us as we return three years later help survey for one of Maryland’s endangered species on the Eastern Shore, the Eastern Tiger Salamander! We were fortunate to assist Maryland Department of Natural Resources to search for and count egg masses while hoping to catch a glimpse of breeding adult salamanders hanging out in the incredible Delmarva Bay ecosystem. Despite that these seasonal wetlands are mostly still waiting for more rain and often freezing over, these elusive amphibians were found in a higher abundance than previous years in at least one of the study sites. Getting to watch our largest terrestrial salamander gracefully swim through wetland with their long, powerful tails was an incredible experience. These salamanders will soon return underground where they spend most of the year. After seeing the results first hand, we feel optimistic that if proper management of this habitat continues that there is a bright future for this special species here in Maryland.
