We recently had a really special wildlife rescue call that we are excited to finally share with you. An active Great Horned Owl nest in a Bel Air neighborhood blew down in a storm and we had to call in some wonderful partners and volunteers to work together to see if we could safely get the owlets back into the tree so that their parents could continue to raise them. Many times rescue truly takes a village, with lots of phone calls, coordination and dedicated people who love wildlife, often who know that more times than not, these efforts are not successful. This situation almost fell into that category as we lost one owlet that fell despite hours of searching, another didn’t make it even with expert medical care and the third disappeared for a week after being placed back in an artificial nest.
See the whole renesting effort here in this video, thanks to the homeowners Mark and Catherine who monitored and transported the owlets, our volunteers John and Jenny Blake, return transporter Bruce Ragusa, our local arborist (who loves to help wildlife and our center but doesn’t want recognition), and especially our friends at Owl Moon Raptor Center who provided medical care and built the artificial nest for us. For at least this one resilient owlet, this story appears to have a happy ending.
