When most people think of a fox, they instantly picture a Red Fox. We have another fox species, the Gray Fox that is perhaps even more interesting. The Gray Fox is rarely seen because it is nocturnal. Probably their most unusual adaptation is that they can climb trees, giving them behavior that appears much more catlike than some of their related species. We have had scattered sightings in the lower Susquehanna region in Maryland but they don’t appear to be very common in this part of the state, at least in Harford County where we have done most of our surveys. We still hope to catch one on our trail cameras.
In March of 2016 we did finally confirm a sighting with this orphaned gray fox kit that was taken to one of our rehabilitation partners for care.
